NGO’S MUST GROW OR DIE!

If your non-government organisation (NGO) is not growing, I will advise you to read this whole pamphlet because the sad reality in South Africa is that the majority of NGO’s are in fact either stagnating or slowly dying. Many organisations serving their clients are collapsing, unable to adapt themselves to an ever rapidly changing and hostile environment. As you read this pamphlet, you can probably think of more than one organisation who may have perished in the recent past, forget about those beset with a struggle just to survive!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REAL CHALLENGES?

After years of working in the sector, our understanding is that some of the most common challenges facing NGO’s are:

  • An understanding of their primary role vis-à-vis other sectors in society.
  • An ability to understand and adapt to rapid change.
  • Knowing how to become effective learning organisations.
  • An ability to effectively cultivate, mobilise and apply resources efficiently to achieve strategic organisation objectives and ensure long term financial sustainability.
  • Dealing creatively with conflict amongst staff members that can compromise organisation vision and mission.
  • Cultivating strategic partnerships that can add value to projects and thus substantially increase sustainability.
  • A lack of focus on the holistic growth and development of the individual within the organisation in order to facilitate the growth of the organisation as a whole.

OUR INTERVENTION:

After years in the organisation development sector, Frank Julie and Associates led by Frank Julie, an experienced development consultant, fully understand these challenges. That is why we offer no quick fixes or piecemeal solutions. We firmly believe that the solution for any problem facing an organisation lies within the organisation itself. Our role as facilitators is to assist an organisation to discover that solution. We do this in a way that respects the organisation’s process, its uniqueness, strengths and achievements. We build on what you have and what you know. Our approach is holistic focusing on both the organisation and the individual. We do this since we believe an organisation can never employ only part of a person, but always a full person! We help organisations develop a consciousness of becoming self-reflective, self-sustainable, gender-, race-, and rank sensitive.

“AS A MANAGER OR DIRECTOR YOU ARE PAID TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE. IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE, IT IS A SURE SIGN YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!”

(PETER DRUCKER)

BE REALISTIC – DEMAND THE IMPOSSIBLE!

“To meet the demands of a successful transformation in any organisation, every leader must be prepared to undergo an internal transformation – a painful process cleansing a leader from all the contamination of an unconscious, unthinking, gender-, race, class and rank blind society. Like steel forged in the white heat burning the impurities so a leader is moulded on the anvil of those invisible social forces that must lead to change - human change, a change that must lead those at the margins to have more access to resources and power over choices. The leader of today must be prepared to sit in the fire of transformation without getting burned!”
